Server downtime, again

On 28 November I took the server offline to once again to install Debian on it, as Arch again showed not to work for me. This time it was the software I need to make the printer work that although compiled correctly would not install on Arch. It seems that Arch does something so differently here that a standard way of installing this print driver was impossible. I was unable to find a solution online and therefore choose to go back to Debian, as I cannot do without the printer. The server is also my print server.

Then the unfortunate happened. Something broke or became unstable in the server. 5+ minutes boot time is totally unacceptable and unusual on this machine. Therefore I began to diagnose the problem. One piece of hardware at a time was removed until only the absolute minimum was left. I even tried a different hard drive. Nothing helped. My conclusion is that it is either the motherboard or CPU that is worn down. Maybe both.

So now my trusty and until now reliable Intel Celeron 1700 MHz with motherboard as been retired and was August 30 replaced with an Intel Pentium 4 2.5 GHz that until now has been stable on its new motherboard.

I just hope it will continue that way for a while...
